PLACEMENT & CULTIVATION
Verbascum is a vigorous statuesque plant that adds drama and contrasting form to meadow, cottage, and gravel gardens in well-drained soils. In summer, bees and butterflies visit the clustered flowers on long branching wands. Cut back flower stalks, if desired, after bloom to encourage a second set of flowers, or allow the stalks to mature seeds and self-sow to continue the show in following years. Apply about 2" of mulch in autumn for wintertime protection in cold winter climates.
Final Spacing:
1.5'
Water Requirements:
Low Water Use
Watering Details:
Only need to water during especially prolonged dry periods.
Soil pH:
Neutral to alkaline.
Fertilizer:
Apply a granular, organic fertilizer in springtime. Too much fertilizer will hinder flowering.
Diseases & Pests:
Leaf spot and powdery mildew can occasionally be a problem, especially if plants do not get enough air circulation or receive too much moisture, as this can cause some fungal problems to spread. Prevent by placing in areas with adequate air flow and not overwatering.
