zone 7 Tennessee . High rate of germination. Easy to grow. The blooms were so fun and the basket is just such a botanical curiousity. This is a native but not in our region, so unusual to our area. This did great for me May and June . I planted in rich retentive soil. It was the only place I had for it. Well, come July and August we had unsually wet wet summer and these just got eaten up with a fungus or mildew. I would still grow again though b/c May and June it was a fun plant. Lots of different bee species on it. It did not smell of honey to me, it smelled like powedered milk to me. Not unpleasant but odd. Also the blooms would close up around noon. Which I could not find any info on internet about this but they would bloom open until noon and then close up. This was an unusual fascinating plant for me. Would grow again even with the mildew disaster.
I live in the SF east bay and these flowers were awesome! They are very hardy once they get going! I planted them in several different locations and nothing bothered them. They take longer to germinate than most flowers when grown indoors. Plan on 3 weeks or more. They transplant well. I had flower heads of over 4 inches across. The first blooms are usually the biggest ones. I tried them because I saw them in Select Seeds catalog. What a good choice! They will bloom for about 6-8 weeks before they bloom out. They do close up at night just so you know. Pick in the early morning once opened and they will stay open once cut. Loved them!
Hi, I'm in Southern California and want to try these - what time of year did you plant these?
These didn’t produce. So disappointed. Nothing grew at all.
