PLACEMENT & CULTIVATION
I can hardly imagine a garden without salvia; the genus has many irreplaceable floral gems. They are easy to grow and trouble-free, many are quick to bloom, and they grow well in gardens or containers. They offer a never-ending parade of flowers—at least until frost—and the antics of visiting hummingbirds and hawkmoths. Grow in containers or the garden in well-drained soils. Pinch back once plants reach 6" tall to encourage bushiness. Stake early and deadhead frequently or cut for bouquets. May appreciate some afternoon dappled shade in hot climates.
Final Spacing:
1.5-2'
Water Requirements:
Medium Water Use
Watering Details:
About 1" per week, though it will tolerate drought once established.
Soil pH:
Not particular about pH
Fertilizer:
Mix compost into the soil prior to planting. Salvia are light feeders, however a midsummer application of organic granular fertilizer low in nitrogen but higher in phosphorus and potassium will promote flowering.
Diseases & Pests:
Prevent powdery mildew by spacing plants apart for increased air circulation. Aphids can be washed off leaves with a strong stream of water or insecticidal soap applications.
