Also called golden bartonia, this star-shaped flower has a sunny yellow sheen and a fountain of gold stamens at its center. A California native that prefers drier, very well-drained soils, it blooms in the afternoon and morning and is scented. Native bees love it!

California native Mentzelia thrives in rocky, very well-drained soils along with California poppy. It is a spring to summer bloomer that is perfect in large drifts in xeriscape settings. In the garden, it blooms well and attracts native pollinators, but will melt away if summer rainstorms are at all frequent.
