Matthiola longipetala subsp. bicornis
Past generations of gardeners called this plant the Melancholy Gillyflower because of its drab and downcast appearance during the day. At dusk, however, the lavender and white four-petaled blossoms unfold, each wee flower releasing an intoxicating scent. Sow directly in the garden in spring behind showier flowers. Listed in an 1886 catalog. Self-sows.

PLACEMENT & CULTIVATION
Evening scented stock is an easy sow-and-grow annual with loose sprays of blossoms that open evenings only, filling the garden with perfume. Best grown in drifts at the garden's edge with sweet alyssum and Virginia stock for additional beauty and fragrance in the daylight hours. Sow into spring containers with violas to bring fragrance up close.

Water regularly until established, then water during dry spells.
Soil pH:
Prefers neutral to alkaline pH levels. If soil is very acidic, mix in some bone meal or hardwood ash prior to planting.
Fertilizer:
Mix in a couple of inches of compost prior to planting if soil is poor, or apply a balanced fertilizer in spring and mid-summer.
Diseases & Pests:
No major problems. Slugs and aphids may attack plants. Use iron phosphate pellets for slugs and water sprays or soap spray for aphids.
