Creeping Zinnia

Sanvitalia procumbens
Introduced in 1798 from its native Mexico, this golden-yellow daisy flower looks like small black-eyed Susans with short petals and big brown eyes. They are covered with blooms all summer, and the trailing stems have a billowing effect, adding an informal ambiance to garden edges and containers.

PLACEMENT & CULTIVATION
Creeping zinnia, or Sanvitalia, is a native of Mexico and Central America, introduced into English gardens by 1792. A low grower that adorns the summer garden with radiant pointed gold petals stitched around velvety brown centers. Quickly blooming and well-behaved, it thrives in heat and humidity, creating carpets of narrow, deepest green leaves and bright flowers. Garden edges and paths and containers are good sites—well-drained, moist soils and sun are the only requirements.
