California Poppy 'Golden West'

Eschscholzia californica
Introduced in 1907 and listed in a 1923 catalog, Golden West has cup-shaped flowers of sunny yellow with orange centers. This selection of native California poppy is larger flowered but similar to the original that Spanish explorers encountered by the million, calling its native land 'the land of fire'. Scatter seed in well-drained borders or sunny rock gardens to take advantage of its dazzling color under the sun. Self-sows.

PLACEMENT & CULTIVATION
California poppies are beguiling wildflowers with teardrop buds opening to silky lustrous cups, closing in the evening and when cloudy weather reigns. They self sow readily and often find just the right spot to grow—along dry garden edges, rock gardens and gravelly spots where little else thrives. Best in areas where summer nights cool down, where they bloom long, elsewhere a spring to summer delight, especially when grown in large drifts. Deadhead.
