Eupatorium perfoliatum
Wildflower gardens, especially wet areas and rain gardens, are the perfect home for this native perennial. The fuzzy white flowers are a bountiful feeding ground for many bees, butterflies, wasps, and beneficial insects. It also serves as a host plant for several moth species. In addition, the name boneset suggests medicinal use; and it once was used in treating break-bone fever or dengue.

SOWING INSTRUCTIONS
Depth:
Surface sow. Requires light for germination.
Sprout Time:
30-60 days
Starting Indoors:
Stratify for 30 days. Sow in a container, cover with a plastic bag and refrigerate, or mix seed with damp clean sand or vermiculite, bag, and refrigerate at 35-40°F. Check often for germination and maintain a lightly moist medium. Transplant any seedlings as they germinate. After the chill period, sow into soilless media and keep at 65-75°F.
Starting Outdoors:
Direct sow in fall or earliest spring, or winter sow into pots in the shade, covered with a thin layer of clean sand and a wire screen to keep out mice and voles. Check for moisture at regular intervals.
WHEN TO SET OUTSIDE
This native summer bloomer can be set in the ground in springtime when all danger of frost has passed, or in early autumn in USDA zones 7-8.
PLACEMENT & CULTIVATION
Boneset will attract butterflies, bees, and beneficial insects and furnish nesting sites in the strong stems. They make a lovely addition to any naturalized setting where they can roam freely and spread by rhizomes and seeds. It is also suitable for rain gardens as it requires medium to wet soils, sandy or clay. Rich soils may promote flopping, and dry sites may result in leaf scorch. Provide a thin layer of compost mixed into the ground, followed by about an inch of mulch. Caution: all parts of this plant contain some toxic elements.
