We grew this new coneflower in our gardens this year, and it quickly became our favorite, for it cheerfully sent up an abundance of flowering stalks while still a young plant. We can't until another year of beauty unfolds with even more flowers. Reliably hardy, pollinator-friendly, heat, humidity, and drought tolerant when established, not fussy as to soil—this summer flowering coneflower is a winner.

Sowing Instructions

Depth: 1/8"
Sprout Time: 7-21 days
Starting Indoors: Sow in late winter and keep at 60-65°F. An initial moist stratification period with temperatures of 40°F for 3-4 weeks may increase germination rates, but is not essential.
Starting Outdoors: Direct sow in earliest spring or late summer to fall.
When to Set Outside: After last frost.

Placement & Cultivation

Coneflower is a butterfly magnet and is welcome in borders with other summer bloomers. They handle hot summer weather with ease and are often cut and added to bouquets. The bristly cone centers are wonderfully decorative, with 'Green Twister' providing an especially exotic look. Divide clumps every 4 years in early spring, only if they become overcrowded, making sure to keep a decent quantity of soil around the roots when moving, as coneflowers are taprooted and not easy to transplant.

Watering Details: Water regularly the first season while establishing, about 1" per week, then only during dry, hot spells.
Soil pH: Slightly acidic to neutral
Fertilizer: Provide with about 2" of compost annually in early spring—too much fertilizer will cause the plants to become leggy.
Diseases & Pests: Echinacea is rarely troubled by pests or diseases, though it may be susceptible to aster yellows. While not fatal, it causes distorted green not pink blooms, discolored leaves or "witches broom" growths. Remove diseased plants promptly to avoid spreading. Prevention via insect control.

I'm fairly new at seed starting but bought a pack of these last year (2021) and they all germinated. Planted them out end of Spring here in Zone 6 and they were all blooming by end of Summer. They were beautiful and neighbors were impressed. P.S. planted some low growing calamintha in and around these and IMO was gorgeous. Plus, being so successful with these encourages me to carry on!
