Tried Winter sowing these, massive fail! Intent on growing them, I put some seeds in pots and watched...and waited...seemingly forever! After that early May planting here in zone 6a, they finally appeared in mid June. Once warm weather hit, they grew quickly! Lovely, fluffy blooms that the bumblebees love! I also planted the white variety from this site. It also came up around the same time. Only about 18-24 inches tall, I am sure they would be taller planted in ground. Will be planting again next year, and remember to be patient! :D
I live in the SF east bay and these plants were awesome! Very hardy, no matter where I planted them. They take full sun. If you are growing indoors from seeds be patient. They take longer to germinate. I almost gave up on them after 3 1/2 weeks but then they all sprouted at the same time. They bloom in late June early July after I seeded at the end of February indoors. Big beautiful 4+ inches across! A hint, let a few flower heads bloom out and dry. Pick the heads and put them in a paper bag for about 2 months and save the seeds inside. You will need to pull all the hair out first and the seeds are at the bottom the the dry flower head. Awesome plant!
