Zone 7 TN. These seemed to take forever to germinate, but once they did I had very good success rate. The seeds are so tiny I had them all smothered together, Somehow with my poor cultural practices I still ended up with ten very strong and majestic plants. These were supberbly scented. I could watch hummers drinking from them . I would see bumblebees TRY to drink from them but could not get into the flower. The plant for me was very tall. I grew these on north side of house with lots of shade in retentive soil. These bloomed for a long time. The leaves alone are worth it. The leaves have a sticky residue that smells like tobacco. The flowers are gorgeous and unique. Good fragrance -- I could actually smell it during day too , not only at evening.
I have had years of good success with these. The hummers and the smaller bees love them. I start in jiffy pellets under a grow light end of april/early may; by the second week of june they're hardened off and ready for the garden. I plant on the north side of the house where they get good sun in the morning and shade in the heat of the day. Soil is kind of heavy (but not clay) but they do well enough. I do have to plant new every year because the seeds do not survive Chicagoland winters.
