HOW TO GROW Ipomoea alba

Sowing Instructions

Depth: 1/4-1/2" Soak several hours in warm water prior to sowing
Sprout Time: 5-14 days
Starting Indoors: Sow in 4" pots about 8 weeks before last frost. Keep at 65-80°F. Cover with humidity dome to retain moisture until germination occurs.
Starting Outdoors: Direct sow in zones 8-10 after all danger of frost has passed.
When to Set Outside: After last frost, when soil has warmed.

Placement & Cultivation

Moonflower's lush dark green leaves cover unsightly areas or add height to borders by twining up trellises and arbors. Northern gardeners should start them indoors to get a jump on the growing season, transplanting to large containers once the nights are warm. They start to bloom in late summer, early fall until frost. Soil and water on the lean side and growing in a container to constrict root run will promote flowering. Rich, fertile soils with plenty of water and regular fertilizer will grow dense foliage and few flowers. Tightly furled buds swirl open quickly and are most fragrant as freshly opened flowers, their scent lessening when pollinated. Warm humid summer evenings also brings out the scent.

Water Use: Medium Water Use
Watering Details: 1" per week, more during especially hot, dry spells. Allow the soil to dry between waterings.
Soil pH: Slightly acidic to slightly alkaline.
Fertilizer: Mix in 2" of compost prior to planting and apply a flower fertilizer at bud set for more abundant blooming.
Diseases & Pests: No major problems.

Select Seeds Confirmed Purchase

Started from seed. Only about half sprouted. Transplanted outside and the vines are growing but no flowers. One flower bud never opened and I watched it closely.
