Peter Henderson's 1910 catalog listed this variety as Japanese Giant White, a nod to its introduction from Japan in 1869. Graceful wands of pure white pea-like blossoms bloom in summer, the plants thriving in protected, warm spots. Provide proper support, for this vine twines up vigorously, making it ideal as a fast-growing annual screen too. Poisonous

Sowing Instructions

Depth: 1/2"
Sprout Time: 7-14 days
Starting Indoors: Sow in pots 3-4 weeks before last frost. Keep at 65-75°F.
Starting Outdoors: Recommended. Sow in place after last frost.
When to Set Outside: 2-3 weeks after last frost, when temperatures do not drop below 45°F.

Placement & Cultivation

This later summer bloomer has upward curving flower wands of bright white that are followed by decorative pods. They attract butterflies and do well in the heat and humidity of full summer, starting to bloom midsummer and continuing until frost. Provide stalwart support, such as an arbor or teepee.

Water Use: Medium Water Use
Watering Details: 1" per week, more during especially dry spells.
Soil pH: Not particular about pH
Fertilizer: Mix in 2-4” of compost prior to planting. An application or two of flower fertilizer low in nitrogen will benefit flower formation.
Diseases & Pests: No major problems.
When to Cut For Bouquets: When pods develop along stems, but less valuable as a cut than purple variety

I could not get this one to grow in my zone 6a New England garden. I've had better success with scarlet runner bean.
