Rue

Ruta graveolens
Herb of Grace, or rue, was historically a potent herb that could vanquish scorpions and their venomous stings and make poison and the plague meek. It still carries a bit of that legend today, for it is an acrid scented herb that can cause welts to rise if mishandled by the unfortunate. But, on the other hand, it is singingly beautiful, with blue-green carefully arranged leaves and a shrubby form studded with gold coins of bloom. All it needs to reign in the garden is sharply-drained soils and a sun-drenched spot.

PLACEMENT & CULTIVATION
Rue, also called Herb of Grace or Countryman's Treacle, was once considered a culinary plant but is now avoided due to the bitter and toxic components within its leaves. This verdant plant is best used as a hedge in herb gardens and cottage gardens for the unexpected beauty of its blue-green leaves and simple gold flowers. Beneficial insects are drawn to this Mediterranean native, and they are of easy culture in any light, rich soil. Prune after bloom to shape. Caution: wear gloves as toxic effects can occur when handling in sunlight. Toxic if ingested.
