Callirhoe involucrata
Callirhoe sprung from mythological origins as the daughter of the river-god Achelous and has found her niche fronting dry garden beds or spilling from rock walls in a fountain of lustrous bloom. This native of the southwest is also known as wine cups for their 1-2" chalice-shaped magenta flowers that combine beautifully with low-growing sedum, California poppies, and other water-wise perennials and annuals in the summer garden.

SOWING INSTRUCTIONS
Depth:
1/8" Scarify seed by rubbing between sandpaper sheets.
Starting Indoors:
Stratify for 60 days for best germination results. Scarify seed and sow in a container, cover with a plastic bag and refrigerate, or mix seed with damp clean sand or vermiculite, bag, and refrigerate at 35-40F. Check often for germination after 30 days and maintain a lightly moist medium. Transplant any seedlings as they germinate. After the chill period, sow into soilless media and keep at 65-70F.
Starting Outdoors:
Direct sow in fall, raking into the soil, or wintersow into pots in the shade, covered with a thin layer of clean sand and a wire screen to keep out mice and voles. Check for moisture at regular intervals.

A beautiful native ground cover, tap-rooted poppy mallow tolerates drought like a champ once established, making it an ideal option for low-maintenance or naturalized areas. Place in full sun in an area with well-drained soil. A native perennial that entices beneficial lacewings and hoverflies to take up residence. Self-sows.
