California poppies are hardy cool weather plants and should be sown in early spring or fall in southern areas. The seed must be sown where it is to bloom and later thinned to give each plant about a square foot of space. They like well-drained, even sandy soil and bloom for a long time. Shearing after they set seed will allow them to rebloom quickly and abundantly. They are easy to grow, drought-tolerant flowers for a sunny spot and are available in a multitude of colors and forms sure to please.
